Flowers for AKA: arguably the greatest hitmaker in Mzansi

Over the course of the week AKA fans continue to pour their heartfelt condolences and special tributes following the Supa Mega’s assassination in Durban.

We take a walk down memory lane from the time Kiernan “AKA” Forbes surfaced in the music and entertainment industry back in 2004 until the recent advent of the Megacy.

In 2004 AKA joined a group called entity, in 2005 the trio released the album, ‘Royal School of Hip Hop’. The album featured songs such as Touch and Go, I Got a Feel, and Whoa to name a few.

AKA proved to be a musician who reinvented his sound, look, and style time and time again in order to remain relevant for fans and the industry as a whole.

He proceeded to debut one of his most anticipated studio albums ‘Alter Ego’ in 2011. The album that featured hits like Bang, All I Know, Victory Lap as well as When I’m Gone, a song that resonates more than ever after AKA’s passing.

In 2014 our beloved Supa Mega gifted us the album, ‘Levels’ an album which would be nominated for the South African Hip Hop Awards and win Best Male Music Video of the Year for the song ‘Congratulate’ and best collaboration for his song with K.O. ‘Run Jozi’.

A year later AKA was announced Best Male Artist of the Year at the 21st South African Music Awards (SAMA) ceremony for the album Levels, a big win for the musician. The same Album was 7 times certified platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).

This was not enough for Bhova, as his known to many social media users, he went on to release yet another album in 2017 which he shared with recording artist Anatii called, ‘Be Careful what You Wish For’. The songs featured on the collaboration included, Don’t Forget To Pray, Branston Drive and Jesus Plug.

The year 2018 marked AKA’s release of ‘Touch My Blood’ another album which went Platinum. The album houses tracks like Mame, Beyonce, Touch My Blood and ‘Amen’ which he sampled from the popular song ‘This is Goodbye’ by Hollis P Monroe.

Many have said “Touch My Blood” was made in efforts to preserve South African Music and its many cultures, seeing that many songs off the album were sampled.

During the year of the COVID-19 pandemic AKA supported house-bound South Africans by releasing the album ‘Bhovamania’, the album featured artists like Flame and Sho Madjozi. Sounds like ‘Casino, Monument, and Sweet Fire are songs which made the album popular.

Kiernan Forbes, AKA, The Supa Mega has definitely left his mark in South Africa and across the Globe. His consciousness to South African struggles, Apartheid regime, post-apartheid systems and his love for the people of South Africa continues to shine with every song played.

We now await his new offering called Mass Country and Album he recorded before he passed on.

The Megacy salutes you Bhova, with you we remain until the finish, as stated in the song Bang,

“I Know you miss me, sit close to the screen so you can kiss me”. – AKA

we will forever miss you so with that said, we will definitely sit close to the screen so we can kiss you.

Heartfelt condolences go out to the Forbes family, and friends, Long live Supa Mega Live Long.
