Expresso viewership continues to fall after Katlego Maboe’s return

Despite Katlego Maboe’s celebrated return to the show after being fired, the popular SABC 3 morning show Expresso is still not doing well. Katlego Maboe charted Twitter trends and grabbed headlines when he returned to the show. However, according to recent reports, the show still hits low numbers and even failed to make it into the television channel’s top 20.

Despite Katlego Maboe’s return to Expresso following his GBV and cheating scandal making headlines and dominating Twitter trends, viewers are not tuning in. Even after Katlego Maboe’s return, “Expresso” reportedly isn’t doing well. Even though Expresso has been trending for weeks since Katlego Maboe’s return, it seems to be losing favour with viewers. On Twitter popular entertainment commentator Phil Mphela claims that the well-liked morning show could not crack the top 20 on SABC 3.

He also disclosed that even Katlego Maboe’s highly publicized exclusive interview received low ratings. When Katlego Maboe returned to Expresso, it became a trend for a few days. The show’s peak viewership was under 250k, failing to place in the top 20 on SABC3 in August. Even his in-depth return interview was unable to top the charts. On the timeline, social media users shared that they could no longer watch the show. Many said they don’t watch TV for updates but rather check their phones.

Viewers voiced concerns about the show’s complexity as they made clear the show requires one to have an Oxford Dictionary close by. They claim the language is too sophisticated for someone who used to fetch water from the river for a teacher during lunch at school, which is the regular South African. Others suggested that it might be because people no longer turn on their TVs in the morning and instead pick up their phones and visit Twitter and Tiktok. They don’t believe it’s about Katlego but think SABC 3 is no longer relevant and exciting.

One Twitter user commented that she had forgotten SABC 3 still existed and believed SABC 3 needed to identify its viewers and produce shows appropriate for their viewers’ average ages. She also stated that she didn’t even think about the channel because it is currently a mix of masala, meaning they air anything.
