Mzansi’s rising singer ZhuriX has answered her calling through her new song, Ariyeng.
The 25-year-old artist, whose real name is Makgotso Mothosola, released a new song last month and she said it was her way of accepting her calling.
“Ariyeng is a song about going back home which is Meadowlands, Soweto for me. I’ve always been told that I have a calling, but I always make fun of it and say I think that calling is music.“I say this song is my way of ukuthwasa. I am acknowledging the spiritual calling, but I feel like I was placed here to be a healer through music,” the singer said.
She said her love of music started when she was young.“Music is something I grew up loving and my grandma was somewhat of a musician, so it comes naturally to me. I started taking it seriously when I reached high school. In 2019, I was part of a band with friends of mine and through that, we travelled to Indonesia and there I met my current friend and manager.
“They advised me to start taking music seriously and doing it professionally. At the time, I didn’t end up doing it. However, in 2021, I started taking my music professionally, because I figured I won’t be young forever so let me start,” she said.ad
ZhuriX is now working on her debut album, which will be released before the end of 2023.
“The project is ready. We’re done with it. There will be a couple of genres such as amapiano, house, barcadi and R&B. I wanted to play around with genres and not box myself. It’s a mixture of everything and it’s more or less ZhuriX trying to find herself.
“I have a passion for afro pop and bacardi amapiano, with a signature style of mixing native languages and rhythms with international lyrics and beats. I want to bring a unique style to afro pop for an international audience,” ZhuriX said.
