The KZN born actor was well known for his character, Baba Mkhize, in Emzini Wezinsizwa. He was also a musician, having teamed up with Maskandi artist Phuzekhemisi on the song Ekhaya Ngonyawo.

He took on numerous roles during his career, starring in local productions such as By The River Side, Shaka Zulu, Abaqaphi and Deliwe. Mqwebu was also very involved in programmes that promoted the development of youth within the arts and culture sector, often giving motivational talks.

According to reports Mqwebu was hospitalized earlier this year but was recovering well.

‘Babu’Mqwebu’s death has come as a shock as the industry is still trying to recover from the recent loss of other legends in the province. He definitely left his mark and will always be remembered,’ said HOD Sibongile Nzimande.
