More than a year ago, Dr. Phakeng stepped down from her position as vice chancellor of the University of Cape Town after reaching a R12 million settlement with the institution due to a ‘governance crisis. Recently, she sat down with My Top 10 at 10 to discuss her life post-UCT and a “tell-all” book she’s currently working on.
During the interview, Dr. Phakeng opened up about the personal challenges she faced while at odds with the university.
She shared that she had experienced a range of difficulties outside the university, including undergoing a suicide evaluation, being diagnosed with a functional neurological disorder, and regularly seeing a team of neurologists, psychiatrists, and physicians since 2020.
In addition to this, Dr. Phakeng revealed that her son had been diagnosed with cancer.
She also opened up about her new 9-5 and looking after her money.
“God works in mysterious ways. I never imagined becoming the multimillionaire I am today. I opted for a 9-to-5 job and focused on consulting. I haven’t touched the funds. If you’re anticipating ‘I Blew It,’ you’ll have to wait longer,” said Phakeng in part.
