Boom Shaka had already made their mark as a premier Kwaito group by the time the 1990s got around. Their first single, “It’s about time” became a huge hit in a short period of time. Within minutes, the song had been adopted as the anthem of the youth of the nation. Lebo, despite Boom Shaka’s popularity, released her first solo album in 1999 named Dream, which went on to win best dance album and best female vocalist at the 2001 South African Music Awards (SAMA).
Lebo’s attraction to the stage was just as intense as her love for music. Starring in films like Soldiers of the Rock and TV shows like Generations, as well as movies like Backstage and Muvhango, she became a household name (2003).
On October 23, 2006, while traveling along the N3 Highway in the East Rand, the driver of the Toyota Prado in which Lebo was a passenger lost control of the car. As far as we can tell, she died from internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the site. When she left, she was only 29 years old. However, there are no publicly available photographs of Lebo Mathosa’s burial.
Nhlanhla Masinga, a 20-year-old student of entertainment and events co-ordination, escaped the accident but was widely accused by witnesses for the death of Lebo Mathosa. Nhlanhla reassured Lebo’s family and friends that whatever had happened was an accident and that he had never intended any harm to come to Lebo.
