The Department of Social Development published a white paper this week examining family life in South Africa, taking into account statistics from Home Affairs, Statistics South Africa, and other government sources until 2018.

From 2008 through 2017, the number of weddings recorded by the government was on the decline, with the exception of a 0.6% increase between 2016 and 2017. The government said that “the number of weddings reported in 2017 (135,458) was the lowest since 2008 (186,522).”

The number of traditional marriages is also on the decline; in 2017, just 2,588 were recorded by the Ministry of Home Affairs. There were 16,003 traditional marriages in 2008, therefore this is a significant decrease from that number.

Divorce rates have been rising steadily over the past few years, according to other indicators.

The highest number of divorces was recorded in 2009 (30,763) and the lowest was recorded in 2011 (20,980), according to the department’s data. Divorce rates continued to rise steadily from 2012 to 2017.

About 115 female-headed households and 40 male-headed households had divorces finalized in 2017. In 2017, the projected resident population was about 5.7 million, and the crude divorce rate was 0.4 per 1,000.

The government reported a long-term decline in couple-headed families due to falling marriage rates and rising divorce rates in South Africa.

“By 1996, the percentage of two-parent households was already lower than the global average, at 54.7%, while the percentage of single-parent households was significantly higher, at 47.3%.

Within that brief 18-year window, “crossover” occurred, and two-parent households became less common than those with a single breadwinner.

Twenty-nine percent of the world’s children did not have a stable, parent-in-law household in 2018. But only a third (34.4%) had the benefit of living with both sets of grandparents.

Yet, 41.4% of kids lived primarily with their moms, whereas only 3.3% lived primarily with their fathers.

The government said that the percentage of children living with both parents (34.3%), mothers (34.9%), dads (2.8%), and nobody (23%) has not changed significantly since 2007.
