Chicco Twala reflects on Brenda Fassie’s legacy, her upcoming Netflix film and future plans

As the founder and CEO of Chicco, an award-winning global children’s furniture brand, Brenda Fassie isn’t your average entrepreneur. Her company is one of the most successful in Africa, and has been a driving force behind the development of the modern African nation. Or, as she puts it, “Chicco is a microcosm of what Africa can be and should be.” But the legacy of this trailblazing entrepreneur isn’t just about Chicco’s impressive financials.

The world lost a musical legend this past week with the passing of Brenda Fassie. As one of the most iconic voices in South Africa, her music will continue to shape generations to come. But now, the focus of her legacy is on the young musicians who followed in her footsteps and continue to push the boundaries of the music industry. I had the opportunity to speak with one of those young musicians, Chicco Twala, about her personal connection to Brenda and her upcoming Netflix film, Brenda Fassie: The Movie.

It’s been a little over a year since the tragic death of South African singer and activist Brenda Fassie. The world lost a legend, and so did her family, friends and fans. The strength, support and love shown to them by so many has been an inspiration to all of us. Today, we’re excited to share the first trailer for a film that’s been years in the making: a Netflix original documentary, The Brenda Fassie Story.

In the days and weeks following Brenda Fassie’s death, stories, songs and other tributes have been pouring in. But one of the most affecting came from her former manager and friend, Chicco Twala. The music legend reflected on Fassie’s legacy, her upcoming Netflix film and what the future holds for her. This is an excerpt of a longer interview with Twala, which can be found in this week’s issue of The Verge. —

As a young girl growing up in South Africa, Brenda Fassie was a role model for me. She was bold, confident and not afraid to speak her mind. Her music, which spoke of overcoming obstacles and achieving your dreams, inspired me to persevere and work hard. I wanted to be like Brenda.
