Cosmetics are made up of mixes of chemical components that are either derived from natural sources or generated synthetically. Cosmetics serve a variety of functions.

 

 

The body or skin can be cleansed or protected using those intended for personal care and skin care. Makeup, or cosmetics intended to improve or change one’s appearance, can be used to hide flaws, accentuate natural characteristics (such the eyebrows and eyelashes), add color to the face, or completely alter the face’s appearance to resemble another person, animal, or object. Cosmetics may be created to enhance body scent.

Cosmetics had a dramatic rise in popularity over the 20th century. Particularly in the United States, females utilize cosmetics at younger and younger ages. The average age of makeup wearers is rapidly dropping, so many businesses—from mass-market ones like Rimmel to high-end ones like Estee Lauder—have responded by bringing out flavored lipsticks and glosses, packaging their cosmetics in glitter and sparkle, and using young models in their marketing and advertising. The social repercussions of younger and younger people using cosmetics have received a lot of media attention recently.
