Heritage Day is a South African public holiday that is always observed on September 24th. Every year in early spring, South Africans gather around the country to eat, drink, and be happy, honoring what makes us all distinctly South African. If Heritage Day falls on a Sunday, it is honored as a public holiday on the following Monday.

 

 

 

 

Heritage Day is significant to us as South Africans because it promotes cultural variety, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace, and economic development. In South Africa, we celebrate Heritage Day by dressing in traditional attire, eating traditional meals, learning about diverse cultures, and spending time with friends and family.This is a day where we are all encouraged to celebrate our own cultural customs within the framework of South Africa’s vast diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions.

Minwenda is the most recognizable clothing piece in Tshivenda culture. It is a knee-length skirt that Venda women often wear. It’s fashioned from an 18-meter-long bolt of fabric called salempur. They also have a yele top that they wear with a tight-fitting T-shirt.
