Thabo “Smol” Mabongwa and Bongani “Murdah Bongz” Mahosana’s leading Afro-House DJ duo, Black Motion, marked their ten-year milestone in 2020. The Healers: The Last Chapter was the title of the duo’s third studio album, which was released at the time. The album first gave the impression of being a celebration of the legacy and effect the pair had established since entering the mainstream music scene.
But in the two years that have passed since the decade-celebration and the release of The Last Chapter, it appears that the album was a self-fulfilling prophecy because, contrary to their earlier claims, it appears that Black Motion is not the Black Motion we have come to know and love because Murdah Bongz has been replaced.
When Musa Khawula was in power and his dictatorship over our favorite Mzansi celebrities was in effect, Black Motion’s breakup was first publicly publicized. Thabo Smol, better known as The Kejele Kejele Man following his interactions with Zodwa Wabantu, was at the time touring alone as Black Motion, which added fire to the rumors.
Murdah Bongz, on the other hand, was marrying DJ Zinhle, falling in love, and becoming a second-time father. Changes that led to Murdah Bongz, now known as Mörda, changing his name officially. However, Mörda did not simply refute the accusations at the time. However, Black Motion afterwards issued a statement disputing the claims, saying the following:
“Spirit Motion would like to state in a record that Black Motion members Thabo Mabongwa aka Smol and Bongani Mahosana aka Murdahbongz have not parted ways. Black Motion still exists and has plans for more years to come.”
Talking to the Drums, the duo’s most recent (and possibly final) album as a unit, was later released to refute the accusations.
We should have noticed something was odd when Mörda released his debut solo album, Asante, named after his second-born child, the one he had with DJ Zinhle rather than his firstborn. Black Motion are participating in the Tastic Heritage Festival as a result. They were participating in publicity interviews prior to the festival as a result.
But instead of Thabo Smol and Mörda, there was Kabelo Koma, a newcomer who is identified in the titles as a “Member of Black Motion.” Additionally, it appears that Thabo Smol and the interviewer agreed that he would not be questioned about the nature of his relationship with Mörda because the question was not even raised.
More than that, “Black Motion” also promised new music with a focus on drums, which is Smol’s specialty when it was just him and Mörda. This is another clue that there may be more to the situation at hand. Little is known about Kabelo Koma or the contributions he will make to the team.
