Show a little heart, Mzansi – there’s still hope for Bonga Sithole.

The sympathy initially displayed for Bonga Sithole vanished as he struggled to overcome addiction, and that’s typical of a society with little empathy for the sickness.

Sithole got recognition for his viral videos and remarkable vocabulary. As his addiction became public, he was given the chance to enter rehab, but he couldn’t yet.

Sithole was offered help, but he didn’t accept it. People who haven’t experienced addiction or watched a loved one struggle may not grasp its hardships.

Addicts must hit rock bottom and want to recover before they can. Forced rehab or an intervention rarely works and frequently has the opposite impact, as the person rebels and refuses to do what “everyone else” wants.

Some say nobody should give Sithole money now that he failed rehab and is back on the streets. Addicts often lack empathy. How often have you heard, “Don’t give them money; they’ll buy drugs”?

Addicts are viewed as “less than” and condemned for their choices. This is inhumane.

Many will experience this, as any research on addiction will show. I have three addicted friends. I’ve seen it; I didn’t Google it. One of my teenage friends succumbed to the sickness and committed suicide after several stints in rehab.

We’re in the dark ages regarding addiction.

The other two hid their troubles from me for years. I saw them in their saddest moments and helped rebuild their lives. I appreciate their strength in getting clean. Relapses and hard periods that I wouldn’t want on anyone happened, but they survived. I’m forever grateful.

From my perspective, I can see how badly addicts are treated in society, especially on social media.

Even struggling Springbok rugby star Elton Jantjies, who was rumored to have gone to rehab, displayed disrespect for addicts when he said, “I also noted that I was represented as a drug addict with mental health concerns.” I have no mental health difficulties and have never been in drug treatment.

Here is what people had to say about Msawawa, Mampintsha and Mandoza after this picture was shared

Here is what people had to say about Msawawa, Mampintsha and Mandoza after this picture was shared

Mandla Maphumulo, the songster who was famous by the adopted stage name Mampintsha, was born in Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where he also began his music career. Mampintsha passed away on 24 December after he suffered from a stroke.

Mduduzi Edmond Tshabalala (17 January 1978 – 18 September 2016), also known as Mandoza, was a South African kwaito recording artist. He was known for his contributions to the Kwaito genre and his numerous hit singles, including “Nkalakatha”, Tornado, “Sgelekeqe”, “Ngalabesi”, “Godoba”, “Tsotsi Yase Zola” and “India”, which topped the charts in South Africa and all over the African continent. His second album Nkalakatha, released in 2000, became the biggest-selling album of his career, selling 350 000 units. Mandoza died on the 18th of September 2016 after battling cancer.

A 4 frame picture of Msawawa, Mandoza, and Mampintsha was shared on social media this happened after what people noticed on their lips. The person who posted this picture wrote: people must condomize stroke kills guys.

After the guy posted this picture, someone noticed that the guy is not talking about a stroke, but his allegedly saying the guys suffered from HIV. Because after posting this picture, someone in the comments section commented saying Do they diagnose someone’s HIV status based on pink lips or blood test?

When someone also commented saying Not me thinking the post is about the similarities in the shape of their lips, confused as hell. Then boom I read the caption. You, people, are not scared to go to jail.

To be honest, people are not scared to go to jail. People are not scared of being sued. People on social media like saying things without facts, Mampintsha died of a stroke that’s what the family said in the statement. Mandoza died of cancer that’s what the family said in the statement. Msawawa has never said anything about his HIV status so people need to stop accusing people of things they are not sure of.
