RIP: Nine local celebs who have died in 2023 in SA

It already been nine months since the new year began and several South African celebrities have died since January. Here is a list of nine local celebs who have died in Mzansi in 2023…


1. AKA
On 10 February, South African rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes who was best known as AKA was shot and killed outside Wish restaurant in Durban, on Florida road by an unknown gunman. His murder came as a shock as his life was cut short in a successful plot to kill him.

2. TEBELLO ‘TIBZ’ MOTSOANE
Celebrity Chef, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane was gunned down in Durban with his long-term friend, slain rapper AKA –real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes.

3. MARK PILGRIM
Mark Pilgrim passed on peacefully on Sunday, 5 March at his home after a distressing fight with stage four lung cancer. The veteran radio personality was initially diagnosed with cancer in 1998 and fought long and hard before he was finally laid to rest.

4. COSTA TITCH
Costa Titch—real name Costantinos Tsobanoglou suddenly died in front of a large crowd during his performance at the Ultra Music Festival in Johannesburg on 11 March. He was only 28 years old when he died and was suspected of having died due to an epileptic seizure which his mother does not believe to be the cause of his death.

5. ANGIE OEH
Afrikaans singer Angelique Greeff, best known as Angie Oeh was pronounced dead on 19 August just days after she revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer. She took her last breath at Life Wilgers Hospital in Pretoria around 17:24.

6. DEREK WATSS
Veteran and seasoned journalist Derek Watts died at 74 years old surrounded by his loved ones. In 2022, he was diagnosed with skin cancer that rapidly spread to his lungs. He died on Tuesday, 22 August.

7. TERSIUS EATHON KOCKS
Season 12 Idols SA contestant, Tersius Eathon Kocks’ lifeless body was discovered in his house on Sunday, 27 August. The 35-year-old was said to have battled with mental health and depression, Sunday World reported.

8. BOTHA ROSSOUW
53-year-old, former Rugby player, Botha Rossouw died on 29 August due to a pulmonary embolism, Style You 7 reported. He

9. MBULELI MATHANGA
29-year-old athlete and 2023 Half Marathon champion, Mbuleli Mathanga was found hanging dead in his girlfriend’s room on 31 August in what is suspected to be a successful suicide.

‘7de Laan’ resumes production

The production company Danie Odendaal says the soapie 7de Laan will resume production as there are now sufficient funds to operate.

 

 

‘7DE LAAN’ CONTINUES
TshisaLIVE reports that Danie Odendaal Productions revealed in a statement that 7de Laan production is set to resume on Thursday, 7 September.

“After further engagement with the SABC regarding outstanding payments, Danie Odendaal Productions is pleased to announce that although the full amount owed has not yet been settled, there are now sufficient funds to resume production.”

“We confirm that production will recommence on Thursday, September 7,” said the production company in a statement.

The company adds that the cast and crew are committed to delivering the high-quality content their fans and viewers deserve.IOL reports that Danie Odendaal Productions suspended all normal 7de Laan operations with immediate effect this week due to insufficient funds.

The publication adds that the SABC had been struggling to make the necessary payment to the production timeously, which made it difficult to maintain the daily production requirements.

The cast and crew were informed in a letter that they were not required to be at the production studios until further notice.

“Please also be reminded that the principle of no work no pay applies as per the contractual terms and conditions.”

Kelly Khumalo’s alleged abusive relationship leaves Mzansi in tears

Afro-pop powerhouse Kelly Khumalo is making headlines after she opened up about her alleged abusive relationship with Jub Jub.

According to Sunday World, the star singer told the police how she was allegedly raped and almost dumped by her ex-boyfriend Jub Jub.

Near Death Experience

Kelly Khumalo revealed that she was allegedly strangled about eight months pregnant. The incident reportedly happened after the two argued. The star singer said she started experiencing severe abdominal pains after being assaulted and had to be treated at the Sandton Clinic.

2010 Alleged Incidents

Kelly Khumalo was also allegedly assaulted in June 2010 after being found with other co-actors at Rhythm City’s studio. Jub Jub accused her of having a relationship with one of the co-actors.

She also has it that she was allegedly assaulted with open fists, leading to her lip scar, which is still visible today. Another alleged incident happened at Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s house in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

Kelly Khumalo alleges that she was assaulted with a glass, and the incident led to a nasty fight, which included her mother and sister, Zandile Khumalo.

DARING ALLEGATIONS AGAINST TV HOST
2012 Rape Allegations

The celebrated star singer alleges that she was raped in 2012 by Jub Jub. The incident reportedly happened after she refused to have sex with him.

Sunday World has it that – “She said Jub Jub took out a pillow and suffocated her. He had the pillow on her face while he was raping her. When he was done, Kelly said he removed the pillow and left for his court hearing.”
