RIP During the racist apartheid regime, he founded the Zulu Inkatha party after becoming disillusioned with the African National Congress (ANC).

Thousands were killed in clashes between supporters of the two parties in the early 1990s.

But he was later welcomed back into the fold, serving as President Nelson Mandela’s minister of home affairs.

Chief Buthelezi was a shrewd but controversial politician, who disagreed with the ANC’s tactics of armed action against white-minority rule and trod a moderate path as leader of an ethnic-Zulu homeland.

He was opposed to international sanctions on South Africa, arguing that they would only harm the country’s black majority.During the clashes in the early 1990s, Nelson Mandela’s ANC accused him of collaborating with the white-minority government.

Some feared the violence could lead to a civil war and derail the transition to democracy which saw Mandela become president in 1994.

Many believed that members of the apartheid security forces were working with the Inkatha movement to fight the ANC but Buthelezi always denied that.

President Cyril Ramaphosa led tributes, describing Chief Buthelezi as a “formidable leader”.

He said he had “played a significant role in our country’s history for seven decades”.

The president added: “Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi has been an outstanding leader in the political and cultural life of our nation, including the ebbs and flows of our liberation struggle, the transition which secured our freedom in 1994 and our democratic dispensation.”

He said Chief Buthelezi had died in the early hours of Saturday, two weeks after celebrating his 95th birthday.

Chief Buthelezi was hereditary chief of the Zulus, South Africa’s largest ethnic group.

He was born into the Zulu royal family – his mother was Princess Magogo kaDinzulu, the sister of the Zulu king. Chief Buthelezi played the role of his own great-grandfather, the Zulu King Cetshwayo, in the 1964 film Zulu.

He was prime minister of KwaZulu, the Zulu homeland, and in 1975 founded the Inkatha Freedom Party, a Zulu political and cultural movement. He stepped down as party leader in 2019 after 44 years at its helm.

The somber news was conveyed to the nation by President Cyril Ramaphosa.This poignant moment transpired just a fortnight after Buthelezi’s 95th birthday, marking the conclusion of a remarkable life journey.President Ramaphosa shared the sorrowful news on X, previously known as Twitter, stating, “Prince Buthelezi, who served as the democratic South Africa’s first minister of home affairs, passed away in the early hours of today, Saturday, 9 September 2023, just two weeks after the celebration of his 95th birthday.”

In his heartfelt tribute, President Ramaphosa hailed Buthelezi as an exceptional leader who played pivotal roles in shaping South Africa’s political and cultural landscape. He commended Buthelezi’s enduring dedication, evident throughout the liberation struggle, the pivotal transition to democracy in 1994, and the establishment of the new democratic era.

President Ramaphosa conveyed his condolences, remarking, “My thoughts and prayers and those of government and our nation go out to the Royal Household who have been blessed to share uMntwana waKwaPhindangene’s extended lifetime with him, as well as to the Zulu Nation and the leadership and membership of the Inkatha Freedom Party.”In a statement released by the Buthelezi family, it was disclosed that Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s passing occurred quietly and without suffering. Recognizing the profound impact of his loss on many, the family extended their appreciation for the anticipated outpouring of condolences and respects.

They announced plans to collaborate with His Majesty the King and the Royal Family, His Excellency the President, the Buthelezi Clan, and the leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party to orchestrate the appropriate funeral arrangements. Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s life began on August 27, 1928, in the rural heartlands of South Africa. He was born into the Zulu royal family as the son of Chief Mathole Buthelezi and Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu. His heritage was steeped in rich Zulu tradition and culture, laying the foundation for his deep-rooted connection to his people.

Buthelezi’s early education took place at the Impumalanga Primary School, and he subsequently attended Adams College, a missionary institution that played a pivotal role in shaping his worldview. His thirst for knowledge and commitment to education saw him later enrolling at the University of Fort Hare, a prestigious institution known for producing prominent African leaders.

However, his academic pursuits were interrupted when he was called upon to fulfill his traditional and familial responsibilities. In 1948, following the passing of his father, Buthelezi was thrust into leadership as the Chief of the Buthelezi Clan.

Khanyile who hails from the Kwangono Village in Nkandla in the north of KwaZulu Natal was an educator at the Simelane Secondary School in Dobsonville, Soweto. Her fiance, Siyabonga Masikane who is also a school teacher in Newcastle, KZN said that he is far from recovering from the tragic news that his fiance is no more.

“It feels like a dream and I am still hoping that someone will wake me from it. My fiance passed away in a very traumatic way and that eats me up. I am always picturing the way she died and it’s affecting me because she left our two-year-old child is now without a mother,” he said.

Masikane said that Khanyile passed away with her two cousins Mpilonhle Seme and Bongi Nkomo. “I received a call from the people in Johannesburg who knew me to tell me that the building where Nokwazi was staying caught fire. Luckily I was aware about the incident since it was allover the news. I really had no idea that Nokwazi was also in that fire.

The following day I travelled to Johannesburg and she was nowhere to be found. “I searched for her in five different hospitals in Johannesburg until I found her burnt body at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital. I am heartbroken and to be honest God took away someone very beautiful he had given me.

It will be hard for me to heal from losing her but I will have to make sure that I channel the love I have for to our child,” he said. Masikane said that the funeral arrangements are still to be made as they are still waiting for the DNA results as her body was unrecognisable.
