Ama2000 are celebrating Youth Day with a spin on a dance scene from the classic movie Sarafina.

Sarafina is a movie engraved in our history – and a must-watch every 16 June, commemorated in South Africa as Youth Day.

But it’s not just the youth of 1976 who are remembering the fateful day. The “Ama200s” – a term given to those born after the year 2000 – are also celebrating.

SARAFINA ‘STILL RELEVANT’ 30 YEARS LATER
More than 30 years after the release of Sarafina, lead actress Leleti Khumalo has reflected on how it is still relevant to the youth of the country.

Speaking to Drum magazine on the 30th anniversary last year, the star revealed how the iconic film impacted not just South Africa, but the world.

She said: “I do not even think the producers had any idea that we were making history. It is a film, yes, but it is a part of our history”.

According to the 53-year-old star, she still receives messages from fans around the world every Youth Day.

She continued: “It is an honour, it’s humbling and heartwarming. June should just be Sarafina month because most youth day celebrations include some element from the movie”.
