Buckingham Palace has announced that the Queen has passed away at age 96. The longest reign in British history is over with the Queen’s passing. She was also the oldest head of state in history.

The Queen passed away gently this afternoon at Balmoral. The King and the Queen Consort will stay at Balmoral this evening and return to London the following day, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

 

The world’s oldest head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, ruled for the longest period of time in British history. After her passing, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, who was the Queen’s eldest son and heir, assumed the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms.

He issued the following statement: “The passing of my cherished Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a time of the deepest sorrow for me and all members of my family.

We deeply lament the loss of a beloved Mother and cherished Sovereign. Her loss will be felt not only by the nation, but also by the Realms, the Commonwealth, and countless other people around the world.

“My family and I will be comforted and sustained during this time of mourning and change by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.” No official information about what will happen over the next few days has been released, but it is anticipated that the Queen will receive a full state funeral,as is traditional to mark the death of a monarch.

The King will approve the final plans in the coming days. Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London on April 21, 1926, and it is anticipated that her body will lie in state so that members of the public can pay their respects.

Being third in line to the throne, after her uncle and father, no one anticipated she would become queen at the time. During her record-breaking reign, she devoted her life to serving her country and the Commonwealth.

Princess Elizabeth made the following declaration in a radio broadcast on her 21st birthday in 1947: “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be committed to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”Princess Elizabeth became Queen in 1952 at the age of 25, when her father, King George VI, died.
