Actress dumps corporate world for a career in the tough entertainment industry

When 28-year-old Athenkosi Mgoqo decided to ditch her well paying job in the corporate world, she was convinced that she would make it in the entertainment industry.

The former Alexander Road High School pupil said while working in the sales department for a corporate company between 2016-2019, she had known in her heart that her calling was to be in the performing arts.

A skit she shared in a chat group with her friends in 2020 during the national Covid-19 lockdown was ultimately shared on social media and suddenly she had a following.

This has since grown to 65,300 followers on Instagram.

“Last year was good to me,” she said, adding that she had featured in season two of uBettina Wethu, and was on Celebrity Mystery Box, where celebrities compete against each other in the kitchen.

Between November and December they started shooting iCherry yam, in which her character is married to an older man, played by Vusi Thanda (Tshawe in the sitcom Emzini Wezinsizwa).

“My character has not lived out her youth, so she is just living her best life with a little bit of cheating here and there,” Mgoqo said.

She added that one of her highlights was being an MC for vocalist Mlindo during his album launch four months ago.
