AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was murdered alongside his close associate Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane while leaving the popular eatery Wish on Florida Road.
The unknown suspect opened fire on the two men at close range and fled the scene on foot, leaving the entire country in mourning. In the wake of AKA’s death, political leaders, celebrities, and fans have paid tribute to the legendary hip-hop artist and called for swift justice for the perpetrators.
Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, took to Instagram to pay his respects to AKA. In a touching tribute, Malema assured AKA’s daughter Kairo Forbes that she would be taken care of, writing, “Till we meet again brother. Worry not, your daughter is in capable hands.”
He wrote on Twitter, “Kiernan was a great talent, a proud South African who loved his country and its people; his music expressed that love, and appreciation for our diverse cultures. My deep and sincere condolences are to his family, especially his young daughter, his friends and many of his loyal fans.”
Celebrities, including Big Zulu, Nasty C, Da L.E.S, and others, have also paid tribute to AKA and expressed their sadness over his tragic death. Fans, friends, and industry colleagues also gathered in Durban for a candlelight vigil and prayer service outside Wish on Florida Road, where AKA and Tibz were murdered. Despite the heavy rains, many braved the weather to come and pay their last respects to the two men.
