She was previously linked to boxing champion Dingaan Thobela, but their relationship ended in 1997, at which point she began dating radio host Romeo Kumalo. In the year 2000, Romeo and Basetsana tied the knot. Many notable people, including politician Tito Mboweni, attended their extravagant white wedding. Former Miss South Africa Peggy Sue Kumalo was one of the bridesmaids, and she helped complete Basetsana’s elegant white ballgown. Mokoki’s sister, Johanna, served as the wedding’s maid of honor.

Basetsana wore several dresses for her traditional wedding. As a first step, she donned a black and white skirt, blouse, beads, and hat. In subsequent years, she adopted the traditional garb of the Isizulu people.
