Nyakasura Secondary School is the name of the institution. A coeducational residential and day high school in Uganda. When compared to other schools, this one stands out because it mandates skirts for its male pupils rather than the more common shorts and pants. We believe this to be the only institution in East Africa doing so. The principal of the school explained that the skirt-like garment is in fact a kilt, the traditional garment worn by males in Scotland. Ernest William Calwell, a Scottish missionary who had moved in the area during colonial times, was the one responsible for establishing the school in 1926, as he said.
When asked their thoughts on the matter, most students (especially male students) say that they don’t mind wearing the kilts, as they are familiar with the tradition and have been well-trained and educated about the school’s history, which is what inspired the uniforms to take on the appearance of skirts.
