Since the terrible news of Amapiano pioneer and entrepreneur DJ Sumbody’s untimely death broke, condolences have poured in.

The Ayepyep performer, whose real name was Oupa John Sefoka, passed away early on Sunday, November according to a statement from his management, Sumsounds Music.

The Monate Mpolaye hitmaker was reportedly traveling on Woodmead road in Gauteng when unidentified gunmen sprayed his vehicle with a hail of bullets, instantly killing him and one of his bodyguards, according to Sunday World. His management has declined to disclose his cause of death due to an ongoing police investigation.

His second bodyguard was rushed to the hospital.

DJ Sumbody, a South African disc jockey and producer, was born in the 1960s as Oupa John Sefoka. He just so happened to have discovered his calling early and slogged straight into the music industry.

DJ Sumbody has other plans and a strong belief in the call of music on his life, even though his parents would have preferred that he finish his university studies. He gave up his studies and dedicated himself to music. The Pretoria-born musician has had early success as a result.

2. A former taxi driver

The Iyamemeza hitmaker initially began ferrying commuters on early-morning cab routes in order to raise money for vinyl records while still in high school. He handled the cabs for his father.

3. DJ Sumbody also worked as a radio presenter

The radio was a hobby for the music producer as well. He volunteered at a Tshwane community radio station before getting his big break in the music business.

His dedication eventually earned him his own program, Mashaedi on the Engage with DJ Syco and Lee on Tshwane fm, which he also produced.
