The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) paid tribute to international artist Esther Mahlangu and fashion designer David Tlale.
TUT has awarded them with honorary doctorates in recognition of their contribution to the fashion and arts industry.
According to Kaya FM, TUT’s spokesperson Phaphama Tshisikhawe said, “These are giants in their field, with decades of groundbreaking achievements and contributions to show for their dedication and talent.”
“Furthermore, we look forward to much collaboration and engagement with the recipients, as we know our academic programmes and students will benefit greatly,” he added.
This is Esther’s third honorary doctorate, the 86-year-old, whose iconic Ndebele art has earned her global recognition and collaborations, was honoured with the Doctor of Art and Design.
Taking to her instagram, she thanked the university for honouring her. “Thank you to Tshwane University of Technology for the honour of my third honorary doctorate,” she said.
Esther started painting at just 10 years old and her craft was trained and nurtured by her grandmother who taught her the ins and outs of painting the exterior walls of their homes.
Also taking to his Instagram account David Tlale said he dedicated the doctorate to his late mother. “I am humbled to be Conferred by @tut_official2 with the Honorary Doctorate in Arts and Design. Much appreciation and love. I dedicate This Doctorate Degree to my Mom Joyce’ my family, friends, the media and my beautiful country South Africa.. to my team thank you… God Your Grace is Sufficient for me,” he said.
