African Spirituality is such a vast array of misinformation these days that it’s hard to truly understand what is right or wrong. You would think that sangoma’s with a platform would be able to fix this problem but you’d be wrong.
Reality television has only made this worse with more stereotypes being confirmed.
Gogo Skhotheni has had a season worth of drama this year. She has her own show on Moja Love and all it’s done is unravel what people thought she did. She had embarked in questionable behaviour including marrying a second husband.
People were up in arms last night when Dr Maweni and Gogo Skhotheni doubled down on their use of love potions during the reunion special. They both felt as though it is perfeftly normal to use these on their partners and giving them to others to use. It wasn’t quite what people expected to hear.
Twitter folks had many responses to the reunion and none of them were positive.
One user wrote, “Why does Gogo Maweni believe so much in Love portion, shouldn’t love come naturally? #GogoSkhotheni”
While another user wrote, “Lol it’s like I’m watching criminals confessing their crimes in the most chilled way. #gogoskhotheni”
An observant user wrote, “#gogoskhotheni Skhotheni & Maweni try so hard to normalise witchcraft..”
A final user wrote, “Gogo Maweni is a great speaker, she makes sense when she explains how she does things but her and Tumi’s rationales behind love portions and their ubunyanga (sangoma status) is questionable. #gogoskhotheni”
Nothing about this reunion surprised me in the least bit though. Through the season, Gogo Skhotheni has been adamant that she believes this is a good thing. I just feel like people will continue to treat sangomas with contempt because of this kind of content. It’s time Moja Love gives us something educational instead.
