It’s been 25 years now that Muvhango has been on TV and the producers have held it down even even during difficult times. The drama at the royal family and emerging story lines have shown that they it’s worth it. But the entertainment landscape is changing very fast especially now that viewers seem to be gravitating more towards short series and reality shows. Entertainment Commentator Phil Mphela has touched base into a very difficult conversation to say that “should they scrap the show or keep going”. Some have argued that it’s the best when it comes to its storyline and cast but it has become redundant over the years. According to the latest ratings, they manned to pull 1.8 million viewers this year as compared to 4.4 million achieved in 2021. This decline is very concerning because it show that less people are watching it.

Is it because of redundant content?

Well, one cannot pin point the cause to one factor – a lot goes into putting together a stellar production. In the past couple of years we’ve seen hit shows such as Isidingo (The Need) and Rhythm City bowing out to give space for new and revamped shows that are in line with the current trends.

The need for fresh shows

I’m glad that the SABC has decided to open up the industry and scout for content creators. The only downside to this is that they will be retaining 100% of the content. This means that you’ll most likely get a once off payment and be forfeited from receiving royalties in the future.
