Three babies were born to the mother. The doctor entered the room after waiting for thirty minutes and apologized.

The news that they were having triplets delighted Amy and Michael Howard of Center Moriches, New York. The soon-to-be parents were thrilled and generally aware of what to anticipate, but they were unaware of how drastically their lives would alter.

Michael and Amy were both aware right away that there was a problem when Amy gave birth to her three boys in October. Due to a disease known as craniosynostosis, the heads of Hunter, Jackson, and Caden were all shaped improperly at birth. Babies born with this syndrome have prematurely fused skulls, where the bones united inside the uterus. This can result in a head that isn’t the appropriate shape and a brain that isn’t fully formed. The brain may function less effectively if the issue is not immediately resolved. The Howards believed that the triplets’ close proximity in the womb was to blame for the issue, and that once the boys were born, their heads would begin to form normally.

 

The newborns’ appearance astounded the physicians when they examined them. The prevalence of craniosynostosis is 1 in 2,500 births on average. Though it appears unlikely, the likelihood of all three triplets having it is 1 in 500 trillion. Nevertheless, the babies had it, and the parents were informed by the doctors that all three of them would require surgery to correct the issue.

The first triplets to have craniosynostosis surgery were the boys, who were just nine weeks old. After two days in the hospital, the boys were able to go without incident because they all recovered. They still had a long way to go before getting healthy, and for six months they had to put up with wearing special helmets for 23 hours every day, seven days a week. This was done to ensure that their skulls recovered in the proper manner.

The heads of Hunter, Jackson, and Caden were all the proper size and form when they were more than a year old. Important developmental milestones had also been successfully attained by them. They had overcome the ailment they were born with and were typical, healthy infants. Even though the odds were impossibly high and had never been achieved before, the outcome exceeded everyone’s expectations.
