Dawn Thandeka King has returned to the small screen. In a first for the SABC, the broadcaster has given a lead role to a woman over the age of 40.

 

 

 
This past year, I watched an old episode of The Wire; a character called Dawn Thandeka King was a police informant who was trying to rebuild her life after having a child at a young age. As she put it, “I had a baby. Now I have to keep this life going. I don’t have no choice.

A few years ago, I was working on a television series called The House of Kings. I had just finished shooting in Zimbabwe and was returning to South Africa, where the series was being made. On the plane, I was browsing through the in-flight magazine and came across an advert for a new soap opera called Isidingo. It was being made by the same company as House of Kings, and it was a remake of a famous South African series called Isidingo.
