October 2020 is the day that South Africans will remember as the day that Durban Gen first aired it’s very first episode, the viewership from when the hospital soapie first aired was so high that so much was expected of the soapie.
And now after less than 2 years and 2 season’s the show has allegedly been axed, according to entertainment reporter Phil Mphela the once popular soapie will not be renewed for another season and it will officially come to an end in January 2023. After so much promise from it’s first episodes, the soapie which is produced by Stained Glass, the same company that produces the popular SABC 1 soapie Uzalo. This is not what the creator’s of the soapie expected.
When it first came soapie lover’s had compared it to America’s very own “The Good Doctor” and “Grey Anatomy” but just after 3 months of it’s debut the numbers had started falling and by the beginning of 2021 around 300 000 viewers were lost. This was then followed by a number of it’s main actor’s leaving the show. This was just the beginning and the viewership continued to decline.
The storylines in the soapie continued to be over the place, even when they introduced well known celebrities such as Lasizwe, it didn’t bring any change and it is always the case, once a soapies numbers drop it is always expected that they could be consequences and Durban Gen certainly suffered the same fate.
Credit though, should be given to Durban Gen for giving a lot of unknown actors and actresses the opportunity to be on screen, the likes of Dr Bhengu, Dr Jack, Dr Zondo and Nurses Calvin and Phumeza were unearthed and we got to see new faces on ours screens.
