A hat, a bullet casing, and a walking stick were discovered in the kitchen by police as they sifted through Senzo Meyiwa’s crime scene hours after the Bafana Bafana star was assassinated. Sgt Thabo Mosia testified on Monday as the state’s first witness, describing the scene on October 26, 2014, just after Meyiwa was slain.
Mosia said in court that he arrived at the scene approximately 20 minutes after midnight after being dispatched to a murder scene. When he arrived, he was greeted by Brig Ndlovu, who informed him of the incident. The crime site had already been taped off.See the source image
“We took a tour of the crime scene. I then secured a bullet jacket, a [black, white, and brown scotch] hat, and a grey walking stick… I secured the location in preparation for photos and forensic examination. “I brought the exhibits,” he explained.
Mosia added that he noticed a bullet hole in the kitchen door, which the suspects used to enter the house. Mosia stated that after securing the crime site, he summoned one of his colleagues who was in charge of organizing the provincial crime scene management team.See the source image
The crew came the following morning, and he informed them on what he had witnessed earlier. Mosia and the crew then went on a walkabout with the provincial team. Mosia and the team were able to trace the bullet that had made a hole in the door to a kitchen unit adjacent to glass jars during the walkabout. “I believe it deflected and changed course after colliding with the door,” Mosia explained.See the source image
DNA swabs were subsequently taken from one of the bedroom doors and the blood near to the television stand, he stated. Additionally, police photographed all evidence discovered on the site.
Meyiwa was assassinated at his then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, on the East Rand, in a alleged robbery.

While Mosia spoke in a crowded Pretoria high court, Meyiwa’s family sat quietly not far from the five defendants. There was a considerable police presence in court, and the case drew widespread media attention. Earlier, judge Tshifhiwa Maumela ordered Magdalene Moonsamy, Khumalo’s lawyer who was witnessing proceedings, to leave the courtroom after both the defense and the state objected to her presence in court and profiting from witness testimony.
The trial is ongoing.
