Mphakanyiswa Gadla Henry Mandela, Mandela’s father, died in 1930. Nonqaphi Fanny Nosekeni, his mother, died in 1968.

 

 

 

 

 

 
Granddaughter 1

Mandela had six children and was married three times. Only two of his children live to tell the tale.

Children and marriage

Mandela married Evelyn Ntoko Mase in 1944, when he was 26 years old (1922-2004). They had four children together, three of whom died tragically as a result of their relationship.

Madiba Thembekile Mandela, sometimes known as Thembi, was Mandela’s first child, born in 1945. While his father was in prison, Thembi died in a vehicle accident in 1969. Mandela was not permitted to attend the funeral of his son.

In 1948, a second child, Makaziwe (or Maki) Mandela, died in infancy.

Makgatho Lewanika Mandela, a son born in 1950, was Mandela and Evelyn Mase’s third child. In 2005, he died of an Aids-related disease.

Pumla Makaziwe Mandela – popularly known as Maki and named after her little sister – is their fourth and surviving child, born in 1954.

On March 19, 1958, Mandela and Evelyn Mase divorced.

Mandela married Winnie (Winifred) Nomzamo Zanyiwe Madikizela, who was born in 1936, on June 14, 1958, when he was 40 years old.

They had two daughters between them.

In 1959, Zenani Dlamini-Mandela was born.

Nelson Mandela’s youngest child, Zindziswa Mandela, was born in 1960. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Zindzi, as she was known, died on July 13, 2020.

She was buried next to her mother on July 17, the day before her father’s birthday, which is celebrated around the world as Mandela Day.

On March 19, 1996, Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela divorced.

Mandela married Graça Machel, who was born in 1945, on July 18, 1998, his 80th birthday. Machel is the widow of Mozambican President Samora Machel, who was assassinated.

Mandla Mandela (born in 1974), Ndaba Mandela (born in 1983), Mbuso Mandela (born in 1991), and Andile Mandela (born in 1994) were Makgatho Mandela’s four sons (born in 1993).

Pumla Maki Mandela has three children: Tukwini Mandela, a daughter born in 1974, and Dumani Mandela, a son born in 1976, and Kweku Mandela, a son born in 1977. (born in 1985).
