When Makhadzi, a Limpopo native, launched her one-woman performance in Botswana, some of her admirers were less than impressed.
Last Tuesday, she announced the news on Facebook, stating that she will donate 10% of her profits to Botswana charities.
Makwena Makgakga, a local radio personality in Limpopo, penned an open letter to the Ghanama hitmaker on Facebook, imploring her to start her philanthropy where she was born, rather than in Botswana.
“It is not a smart idea to have a one-woman show in Botswana and give back to them.” Begin in your most impoverished province. In instance, there is too much poverty in Venda – Limpopo accounts for 95% of your bookings.”
“I have about 25 learners who come hunting for uniforms here in Limpopo,” Makgakga remarked. We have a large number of students who have dropped out owing to financial difficulties. How did Botswana support your music in a way that Limpopo did not?”
Makhadzi responded to the open letter in the Facebook post’s comment area, claiming she had been trying to book both the Peter Mokaba and Thohoyandou stadiums since 2019.
“I’ve been trying to get Thohoyandou and Peter Mokaba stadiums for a long time, but no one wants to grant me a stadium.” Unless I’m reaching out to the wrong individuals. Being the first Limpopo woman to fill a stadium will be a dream come true. Since 2019, I’ve been attempting.”
The Grammy-winning performer then requested that the radio host assist her in realizing her dream.
“More than anything, I adore my Limpopo supporters.” Because of their support, I am Makhadzi; please help me make it happen by connecting me with the proper people.”
On Wednesday morning, Makhadzi was greeted warmly by a Botswana government minister and the royals of the Batlokwa tribe, who accepted and blessed him.
To meet the distinguished guests, the musician wore shawls and leteisi (Setswana traditional costume), and she was showered with presents and complimented for her achievements in her career.
