This morning, South Africans woke up to the sad news of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s passing. The death of the 90-year-old anti-apartheid activist has not affected his family, friends, and politicians, but the whole country at large.
Many people describe the Archbishop as a robust revolutionary freedom fighter who fought the Apartheid regime in South Africa alongside Nelson Mandela, Steve Beko, and other martyred freedom fighters.
Most South Africans grew up with full admiration of the role the late archbishop played in ending the Apartheid system in the country. The country is mourning, but it seems that not everyone adores Baba Tutu.
Report
As news of his death continues to go viral across the globe, naysayers are already criticizing Desmond Tutu. Taking to social media, critics say that they will never forget what the Archbishop did to the late Mana Winnie Mandela at the Truth And Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
They blame Baba Tutu for begging Mama Winnie to apologize at the TRC, and saying that he wanted her to apologize for Apartheid, which she was not responsible for.
Facts Vs Myth
The fact is, it was the ANC and the Mandela Crisis Committee that took Maka Winnie to the TRC and they further testified against her. What Baba Tutu did was to ask Mama Winnie to apologize for Stompie Seipei’s murder, not to apologize for Apartheid like many believe.
Opinion
No one knows what happened to 14-year-old Stompie. Baba Tutu, according to the TRC report, believed that Mama Winnie acted with negligence on Stompie’s death. It makes no sense why critics continue to define Tutu because of one moment and choose to forget what he did for the country.
Does asking Mama Winnie to apologize for Stompie’s death mean that Baba Tutu sold out the South African Revolution?
