Although a storyline is not someone’s real life, there are people whose storylines are imitating their real lives by coincidence or maybe because they agreed to feature that specific aspect of their lives into the story. For example some people may get pregnant in real life and then producers decide to make them pregnant on the drama too.
Two weeks back on Muvhango we saw Ndiwavho and her friend Shudu facing racism at school. It turns out that Ndiwavho whose real names are Shudufhadzo Mathagwa faced racism in real life. She recalls how she was ordered to cut her hair by her former principal saying it was too puffy for a black person.
As a result she had to plait it as another way to cover it. It was so sad that she couldn’t enjoy having good-looking Afro hair because she is black. Racism is still on here in South Africa, the war between whites and blacks is not really over. Anything that a black child is forced to do by a white person because she is black it’s racism.
“I’m soo glad that I got the role of Ndiwavho on Muvhango because it became my voice and helped me create awareness since most people are not aware that such things happen in schools, such as schools that tell black girls to keep their hair short”, she said. Going through what she has been through already on TV also helped her to create a path of healing because at that time she never wanted to face the storm but now that it’s happening again, although it’s on TV she has no choice but to face it again and finally heal from it.
Many children have low self esteem because of the racism they face in schools. When you are made to feel that you are not worth something, it might as well sink in and you don’t feel confident anymore. South Africa must stand up and fight against racists who wants to divide our country again.
