Monday morning.
Her party, National Freedom Party, has confirmed in a statement that she has passed on after long illness that she had for many years, approximately seven years now.
In 2014, Msibi suffered from a stroke attack, just after six months when President Zuma had appointed her in his cabinet as the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology. She served only six months as the Deputy Minister and then she resigned after she had a stroke attack.
Magwaza Msibi resigned from the IFP in 2011 where she was a National chairperson of the party after she lost her bid in court to succeed IFP leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
She then founded her party, NFP, which gained lot of momentum and won lot of municipalities in the local government elections of 2011. Zululand Municipality also fell from the IFP which it was ruled by it for many years, then it was ruled by NFP. She formed a coalition with ANC as well.
In 2014, after the National elections, President Jacob Zuma then appointed her to the vacancy of being the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology.
Sad enough, she did not last long in her position due to her sickness. Although she did not resign then, she kept her portfolio, until she resigned in 2019.
After resigning from parliament, she made a commitment to rebuild her party, after it failed to contest for local government elections in 2016. This was a result of their national treasurer who did not make the payments on time to the IEC, as a result they could not contest.
Lot of divisions and fights ensued within the party as they were after positions. They even took each other to courts.
Few weeks back, NFP Deputy President, Vikizitha Mlotshwa, resigned from the party and from the Kwa Zulu Natal legislature. He was part of those who founded the party. Mlotshwa survived lot of court action against him taken by some of the party leaders who accused him of trying to replace Magwaza Msibi. He was also accused of plotting for her fall.
The news of Magwaza Msibi’s death has shocked many people across South Africa. We had hope that she will survive and come back alive, sadly death has taken over and conquered.
We are expressing our deepest condolences to her family and members of the party.
