South Africa has one of the highest GDP’s in the African continent and the most democratic constitution in the world, its no surprise that some African brothers and sisters call Mzansi their second home. Many celebrities, whom we have come to know and love are based in South Africa but still hold their citizenship with their home country, there are better chances of succeeding in Mzansi when compared to the other African States.Here is a list of some awesome Malawian South Africans.
Gemini Major
One of South African hip-hop’s best producers, is originally from Malawi, with a production list that reads like an album tracklis, Malawian-born Gemini Major is a big name in the game. Having created dope beats for the likes of Mzansi stars like Riky Rick, AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, K.O, Da L.E.S, arguably the biggest names in South African hip-hop. His distinct trap beats, unique Afropop and Afrobeats have produced some of the most memorable mega-hits in South Africa, even working with the likes of Mafikizolo and Amanda Black. He has co-produced songs with other producers such as Tshego, Nasty C, Tweezy and K.O. Ray Phiri
Chikapa Enock “Raymond” Phiri was born in rural Mpumalanga in 1947, the son of South African musician “Just Now” Phiri. His mother was Malawian. He was honoured with the Order of Ikhamanga award in silver which is granted by the Presidents of South Africa for achievements in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sports. Ray Phiri’s hit record Zwakala has been sampled by many local artists. The song was even the main theme song for local drama series Zone 14. Rapper, Young Nationz also sampled the song in his 2007 single, Zwakala Emzansi. Ray Phiri also featured in the video as well.
Ray Phiri has a daughter by the name of Nonku Phiri who is fairly known in the local hip hop community, Nonku is not only a rapper but a fashion designer as well. In recent interviews with Channel 24, Ray Phiri expressed how proud he was of his daughter’s achievement and how her talents scared him.
“I am very proud of her work … I’m even scared to watch her videos on YouTube – I see her and wish I could do that. I cry when I see her work – tears of celebration – she’s crazy that one. Just like her daddy.”
