Herschelle Gibbs may be a retired cricketer, but he knows a thing or two about rugby. Which is why he used his social media platform to offer Springbok Manie Libbok “advice” on how to improve his kicking skills
The famous flyhalf has been the target of harsh criticism following his performance in the South Africa vs Ireland Rugby World Cup game over the weekend.
In it, Libbok missed a series of crucial kicks.
The Boks were defeated 13-8 at the Stade de FranceFollowing the Springboks vs Ireland game on Saturday, 23 September, many rugby fans shared their opinions about Manie Libbok’s performance.
While some trolled the star player for “costing” SA the match, others vowed to support him despite their disappointment.
Retired Proteas cricketer Herschelle Gibbs also shared his thoughts, offering Libbok pointers on improving his performance.
He tweeted: “Libbok more concerned about the clock than focusing on his actual kick takes his rhythm and timing out. That’s l why he rushes and hooks it most of the time.
Responding to his followers, he offered more insight.His setup is fine .. the time leading up to the kick, which is an issue.”
“Nothing wrong with his technique. Just look at the clock once before he sets up. That’s it.”
“I spoke with his coach at the Stormers a few weeks ago .. it’s definitely a distraction.”
Gibbs went on to describe Libbok as “a fantastic all-around flyhalf.”Unbeknownst to many, Herschelle Gibbs was actually a talented rugby player.
The batsman was drafted into the first-team rugby squads and would go on to play in the 1992 Craven Week final for Western Province against the Free State at Loftus in Pretoria.
Gibbs played alongside players like Robbie Fleck, Selborne Boome, Dave von Hoesslin, and Percy Montgomery, who would all go on to become Springboks.
Speaking to SA Cricketer Mag, Gibbs revealed that rugby was actually his first choice in sports. He said: “If it were up to me, rugby would have been my choice. Best team sport, I must admit”.
