The renowned director has also worked on a number of award-winning and record-breaking shows. One of them being the South African television phenomenon, Yizo Yizo – currently streaming on Netflix. Other shows he has co-created and directed include Bomb Production’s Gaz’ Lam, Jacob’s Cross, Isibaya, Ayeye and most recently, Shaka ILembe.

During a TEDxSoweto talk in 2010, Mahlatsi shared why he makes movies: “I’m like Brenda Fassie of films. I want to entertain. I want to make films for that kid who went to the bioscope like I did. I make films that first and foremost say something about my own environment and myself as a fan of cinema.”

He was laid to rest in a private funeral on Friday, 7 July.
