Tito Mboweni will be digging deep into his pockets to afford his favourite meal – tinned pilchards.

The former Minister of Finance has a fondness for the fishy dish, which he regularly prepares to the amusement of his Twitter followers.

In a tweet that gave South Africans chest pains, a Twitter user tweeted a picture of the price of tinned pilchards – R26,99 for a 400g can.

In recent months, the canned has seen a spike in its price.And Twitter users are not happy.

PRINGLES ARE A LUXURY TOO
It’s not just tinned pilchards that have had SA consumers hyperventilating at the grocery stores. On Twitter, the price of Pringles has been a bitter pill to swallow.

One tweep – who posted a pic of dozens of cans priced at the “value” cost of R39,99, had South African consumers riled up.
