During the murder trial of soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, singer Zandile Khumalo testified in court about the events that took place. She recounted how two intruders entered her mother’s home in Vooslorus on the East Rand, demanding cellphones and money.
Longwe Twala, one the eye witnesses who was present during the incident, pushed one of the intruders and ran away while Senzo fought the other intruder. Zandi tried to hit one of the men with Tumelo Madlala’s crutches, he is a friend of Senzo’s and was among the eye witnesses.
However, a gunshot went off, Zandi then ran off to the bathroom to hide and she heard two more gunshots. When she opened the door, she didn’t see anyone, only the passage and dining room.
Throughout Zandi’s testimony, the accused in the murder trial were seen laughing, giggling and shaking their heads.
Zandi has identified one of the accused, Bongani Ntanzi as one of the men who entered their home during the alleged robbery, which the eye witnesses described as a robbery gone wrong.
Earlier this week, the court proceedings got delayed after Zandi made a request that her testimony should not be broadcast by the media via audio or visuals. On Thursday, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, rejected her complete media blackout request, as he allowed live audio of Zandi’s testimony.
Zandi was visibly emotional during her identification of Ntanzi, she confronted the accused and asked if they know the kind of trauma they have put them through.
“Do you know what you have done to our lives? Do you even know what you have done?”. Zandi pleaded, her voice was filled with anguish.
However, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela objected and told Zandi to stop addressing the accused. State advocate George Baloyi, who led Zandi into evidence, also warned her against addressing the defendant.
