🎉Thuso Mbedu is one qualified lady
The actress attended Pelham Primary School and later Pietermaritzburg High School.
She furthered her education at the University of Witwatersrand and graduated with a degree in physical theatre and performing arts management.
Thuso then flew to the United States and joined the Stellar Adler Studio of Acting.
She is making waves
She won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Performance in a New Scripted Series in 2021 for her role in the Amazon Video limited series The Underground Railroad, making her the first South African actress to lead an American television series. Mbedu played Nawi in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic The Woman King, which was released in 2022.


 

Some of the series that she has starred in are Saints and Sinners, Generations: The Legacy, Side Dish, and The Underground Railroad.

Thuso Mbedu appeared briefly in the second season of Mzansi Magic soapie Isibaya before landing the role of journalism student and wild child Kitso on Scandal!.

She then appeared as Kheti in the second season of the SABC 2 teen drama Snake Park.

Mbedu landed her first television starring role in the Mzansi Magic teen drama series Is’Thunzi after being unemployed for six months.

She played Winnie in the series, a sassy go-getter who dreams of marrying a wealthy and famous rugby player, only to have her dreams dashed when she is exiled to live with her strict aunt in Bergville. She had a panic attack while filming a rape scene for the show.

In September 2017, she was the only African nominated for an International Emmy Award in the category of Best Performance by an Actress for her role as Winnie in Is’Thunzi.

Mbedu made her international debut in The Underground Railroad, a 2021 Amazon Video historical limited series directed and executive produced by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins and based on Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name. Thuso Mbedu received a Hollywood Critics Association Award, an Independent Spirit Award, and a Gotham Award for the series.
