RIP : SUGAR MAN DIES AT AGE 81

Barely a year after getting his long-overdue royalties, music icon Sixto Rodriguez aka “Sugar Man” has died at age 81.

On Wednesday, 9 August, the family of the US singer and songwriter – who received unprecedented fame in South Africa – announced the sad news.

Sixto was known for his politically-themed folk music, which was shipped via bootleg albums into the country in the mid-70s. Unbeknownst to him, he had a cult following in SA, particularly amongst anti-apartheid comrades like Steve Biko.

SUGAR MAN DIES AT AGE 81
In a statement on his website, the family of Sugar Man shared: “It is with great sadness that we announce that announce that Sixto Rodriguez has passed away earlier today”.

Sixto celebrated his 81st birthday a month ago, on 10 July. His cause of death has not been revealed.

The singer was known for hit tracks like Sugar Man, Today I’ll Slip Away, Inner City Blues, and Crucify Your Mind among many others.SIXTO RODRIGUEZ: SAD STORY OF SINGER LOVED BY SOUT AFRICANS
Sixto Rodriguez was born in Michigan to Mexican immigrant parents in 1940. He was given the name “Sixto” as he was the couple’s sixth-born child.

After being discovered in a Detroit bar, Sixto recorded two albums between 1970 and 1971 with the label Sussex Records. Both sold few copies in the US and Sixto was subsequently dropped by his label, which closed down in 1975. At the time, the socially-conscious singer was in the process of completing his third album.

Sixto Rodriguez quit music and ventured into the low-income profession of construction work. Unbeknownst to him, his two albums received massive airplay in South Africa and countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe.Australian record label Blue Goose Music would later buy the rights to his music and re-release his two albums as well as a third bootleg album.

At His Best, a compilation of unreleased songs found its way to South Africa and subsequently went platinum. Around the same time, rumours began to surface that Sugar Man had committed suicide.

Two decades later, two South African fans endeavored to track down what transpired to Sixto Rodriguez and his music. The footage was released in the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man which won multiple awards from film festivals around the world.

Stephen “Sugar” Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom of Cape Town eventually traced down Sixto living a simple life in Detroit, completely unaware of his fame abroad. They eventually convinced him to perform in South Africa in 1998 to sold-out crowds. He would return to play in Mzansi in 2001 and 2005
Segerman told Metro of his friend: “He’s a very philosophical about what happened. I don’t think he’s held on to any anger.

“He’s a lovely, humble guy and, although success happened very late for him in life, he’s just happy people found out about his music and that he’s now famous around the world. He knows that his life is just about as good as it can be – and there is no doubt he is one of the most amazing stories in rock history.”
