Zahara memorial: sisters speak out against her alleged husband

The memorial service of late singer, Zahara was marred by in-fighting as her sisters spoke out to condemn the man who is calling himself the singer’s husband.Death itself is unkind enough. But to have the memories of a late loved one ruined by fights after their death is especially difficult. That’s what the Mkutukana has had to face after laying their daughter, Zahara, to rest in an emotional memorial service which took place in East London on the 22nd of December 2023. Following the service, two of the late singer’s sisters Bande and Lumka, had to speak to the media to try and clarify what is going on.ZAHARA’S SISTERS: “HE IS NOT HER HUSBAND!”
On the 23rd of December, Zahara will be laid to rest for the final time as her family and friends wish her goodbye. However, the memorial service which took place the day before turned into a war of words. The singer’s partner, Mpho Xaba, has so far not been recognised by the family but at a previous memorial service, he had spoken to the public as “Zahara’s husband”. Her sisters, Bande and Lumka set the record straight when they spoke to

In a snippet that’s gone viral on social media, the sisters claim that Xaba is not Zahara’s husband and had not paid Lobola (although a date had been set). They also hint that they had no proof of her illness, while also adding that he is spreading misinformation to the media.WHERE TO STREAM THE FUNERAL
One can only hope that the clashes between the singer’s sisters and her partner don’t stand in the way of what will be a heartfelt funeral for one of South Africa’s most iconic artists of modern history. By the time of her passing, Zahara was an 18-time SAMA winning artist with multiple platinum records, including her breakout album Loliwe which went platinum (by selling 100,000 copies) in 17 days.

Vusi Nova breaks down while paying tribute to his beloved friend Zahara

He was one of hundreds in attendance at the multi-award winning songwriter and singer’s funeral on Saturday held at East London International Convention Centre.

While taking to the podium, a visibly distraught Nova took a few seconds to compose himself before delivering a heartfelt tribute to the 36-year-old.

“Bulelwa was special, she was extraordinary,” said Nova while wiping away tears.“For me, right now, she was the one person who understood me. I understood her. Bulelwa took, literally, my secrets to the grave,” he added.

“She took all my secrets to the grave,” Nova repeated. “I want to promise her I will take her secrets to the grave.”

Nova relayed a story of when Zahara was in hospital, the Thursday before she passed.

“I walked in there as usual in the morning,“ he explained and immediately thought the worst had happened because she wasn’t in her usual ward. He added she had been moved to a private room ”without all pipes.“

He scolded his friend and told her to not “ever scare him again.”

Nova then performed one of Zahara’s most popular hymns ‘Lizalis’idinga Lakho’ which she previously recorded with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

TS Record co-owner TK Nciza was also one of the many guest speakers who shared their experience of working with Zahara.

“It took me 30 seconds to see such a wonderful talent. Immediately I envisioned; I saw something extraordinary,“ Nciza said.

Upon seeing her perform for the first time, he made up his mind to go back to the Eastern Cape, and eventually convinced his wife to let the singer stay with them.
